How to convert photo into hatching for laser frosting glass?

Hi all,
I work with laser cutters at my job. Right now for frosting glass we use hatch lines to fill the area of frosting. I am trying to frost an image of someone (retirement present) into a piece of glass and I'm having trouble finding a way to convert a jpg/bmp/any photo format into hatch lines where the spacing is related to the darkness of the shade (the image is in grayscale). Is there any way to do this, or is there an easier way to go about frosting glass with different degrees of...frosted-ness? Thanks!
