Anyone cutting 1mm brass sheet with laser?

Post by Donaldon »

Hi I'm interested in finding out what minimum power is required to cut say 1mm brass sheet at between 5 - 10 mm/s

Not with co2, not unless you coat the stuff first, and even then, fibre is the way to go, different frequency energy, not reflected so much by the metal.

As stated above you "can't" cut brass with a co2. However you "can't" cut wood with a fibre and I've cut 40mm thick planks in a fibre so...

But on my fibre laser I cut 1mm brass around 285mm/sec @ 2kW and stainless at 535mm/sec

Probably won't help you alot but it gives you a rough idea. =)

Hi ELaser / Blackeringe,

Thanks for the replies, I'm guessing that 2kW fibre is going to be out of my pocket range, I was looking at some 200W OEM fibre units, but I'm guessing that these are not really going to touch brass sheet apart from 'engraving/etching' even at any speed ( I may be wrong, I don't know a lot about laser cutting but I am familiar with how the different lasers work ).

Ask the vendor to run a sample, in *theory* 200 watts with good optics and beam quality is just enough to cut 1 mm metals, if you're patient.
